Jane’s Krazy Mixed-Up Lemon Pepper
Review: Jane’s Krazy Lemon Pepper ★★★★★
Right off the bat I’m going to say that I’m less enthusiastic about Jane’s Krazy Mixed-Up Lemon Pepper than most of the other offerings from Jane’s Krazy spices. This stems entirely from the ingredients. Unlike most of the other products I’ve reviewed on this page
The Krazy Lemon is NOT carb-free or sugar-free. This was not even something I realized when I first bought it, but rather something I discovered after having the product a few months.
As an aside; we do promote a carb-free/sugar-free lifestyle. We keep our diet almost entirely sugar-free 6 out of 7 days a week. It is impossible to eliminate sugars entirely, as a few grams do sneak in, through vegetables mostly. That notwithstanding, over those 6 days we consume far less than a Caffè Mocha at Starbucks, which weighs in with a whopping 35g of sugar.
Here is the full list of ingredients: Rock Salt, Black Pepper, Dextrose, Garlic, Sugar, Onion, Orange peel, Lemon powder/Citric acid, Tricalcium Phosphate
Eagle eyed health conscious consumers will have probably noticed that there is dextrose and sugar listed. For those who don’t know, dextrose is a simple sugar made from starch. You’re basically getting a double whack of sugar here, and that’s not good.
If you’re wondering about Tricalcium Phosphate, that dubious last ingredient, it’s an anticaking agent. I’m not thrilled about its addition here, but it seems to be a mostly benign additive. Tricalcium Phosphate is also found in Jane’s Krazy Mixed-Up Basil.
What to Use it on
Since this product is not carb-free/sugar-free, we don’t recommend using this product in your everyday diet. However, on special occasions and when you want to cheat, it works really well on chicken. It’s quite a shame that it’s not carb-free/sugar-free as I would have really loved to use this in salad dressing or my grilled chicken. I have a number of carb-free dishes that would have gone great with. Such a missed opportunity.
It does pair nicely with some fish and seafood dishes, and we do favor using it on muscles with spaghetti.
Where To Get It
Jane’s Krazy Mixed-Up Lemon Pepper is a little more difficult to get your hands on, but I think it’s likely stocked in bigger grocery stores.
If you’re in Japan, you can find it a few places. Surprisingly at Costco, which sells a variety pack that includes Salt and Garlic varieties. These variety packs run about ¥1,000, which is a great deal. Kaldi Coffee Shop also stocks a number of Jane’s products, including individual packs of the Lemon Pepper. At present, Amazon Japan only has the Lemon Pepper in a 5 set variety pack. It’s not a good deal.
