Colorful Spices in Wooden Spoons (envato.com)

Growing up, salt was practically illegal in my house. It was never on the table during meals and I hardly ever saw my mom using it when she cooked. The salt shaker was kept way in the back of the cupboard, and it only came out when we had guests over. I was taught that salt causes health problems and should never be used. A product like Jane’s Krazy Mixed Up Salt would have never found a way into our home. My mom meant well, but it wasn’t the right thing to teach.

Too much salt is bad for your health. Avoiding salt altogether is not the solution. Rather, learning how to use salt in moderation is what the lesson should be. Our bodies do need some sodium. Cutting down on salt is easier when there is a host of other herbs and spices to flavor our dishes.

Once I started living on my own, I found there was an entire world of high quality salt products waiting to be discovered. Enter Jane and her mixed up creations. The first time I bought a container of the Krazy Mixed Up Salt it was on a lark. Not just a lark, but out of a desire for laziness. Making spice mixtures takes time, and a bunch of ingredients. It’s such a cheat to use, but if you cheat and win, you still win.

Lastly, it’s priced within reach for almost anyone. A container goes for around $5 (¥500). We have no qualms as stating it’s a great deal.

*Jane offers a number of different Mixed Up products. We haven’t tried all of them, but are working our way through the product line.

What to Use Jane’s Krazy salt on

Some dishes require a very delicate mixture of spices. These are the dishes you wouldn’t use Krazy Salt. For example, we wouldn’t ever reach for our Krazy Salt if we were cooking Indian food, an Italian red sauce, or guacamole. Those dishes require specific amounts of salt, and a mixture like Jane’s Krazy Salt with mess everything up.

We like using Krazy Salt when we’re m sautéing something, like chicken breasts. This kind of spice mixture really dresses up naked meat and takes all the work out of these kinds of dishes.  We always use it with my Simple Salad Dressing. Again, it cuts down on the time and ingredients needed to create something that tastes great.

Where To Get It

Jane’s Krazy Mixed Up Salt is easy to get in the US, being stocked in many grocery stores.

If you’re in Japan, you can find it a few places. Notably at Costco, which sell it in a fairly large container. Kaldi Coffee Shop also stocks Krazy Salt, though it’s packaged much smaller.

Sugar and spice and everything nice. It ain’t nothin’ by a spice thing…
