Chocolate-Caramel Rum Café

An original coffee cocktail that is on the sweet side, with heavy notes of chocolate and caramel, obviously. With two ounces of rum, this packs quite a punch so be careful. It’s a winter cocktail that will keep you warm throughout the long, cold nights.

Chocolate-Caramel Rum Café: Mixing It Right

What's Cookin Good Lookin - Homemade Food Ingredients - Review SelvaRey Chocolate Rum
The SelvaRey Bottle (G. McGregor/ https://pawprintphoto.net)

We created this cocktail, Chocolate-Caramel Rum Café, specifically for the SelvaRey Rum we reviewed. Partly because it’s what we had on hand, so feel free to use any chocolate rum you want.

If you’re interested in what we thought about the SelvaRey Chocolate Rum, you can check out our review.

We paired our chocolate rum with Bottega Caramel Liqueur to add some complexity to the taste. We thought this would have enough sweetness to carry the drink, but it didn’t. So, it needs some simple syrup to kick this cocktail into high gear and bring out the flavors promised.

We tried using chocolate liqueur, but the taste didn’t pop. Too much of the same.

Paired with some quality coffee and you’ve got a wonderful drink that is simple to prepare.

I hate to repeat myself, but don’t ruin this cocktail with cheap coffee. Like most coffee cocktails, go for a bean that’s on the bitter side. Anything light, fruity, and/or floral just won’t pair well here. Get a mocha or espresso blend.

You can swap out the brands for something else, but the results will vary. Flavored liqueurs, especially, deviate in quality and taste. Bottom shelve caramel liqueurs will be overly sweet and syrupy, so you might end up with a drink that doesn’t taste right. The point is to know your ingredients and adjust accordingly.

Finding SelvaRey

Getting SelvaRey in Japan is easy, as it’s stocked on Amazon. The Bottega Caramel is a little harder. We ordered it from Masters of Malt in the UK, which is a reasonable option.

If you’re in the US, you should be able to find SelvaRey at most liquor shops. As for the Bottega Caramel, I can’t say for sure. It’s hard to know what you can find without being there. Also, because of the strict alcohol laws, seeing anything like that online is quite cumbersome. That’s a very long way of saying you’ll have to do your own leg work.

You can check out the official website for SelvaRey.

Ok, we’re talking rum here, not ice cream, but this song just fits so well with this drink. It’s got a dash of funky town in there mixed with some electronics. It’s infectious.
