Simple Syrup Is What You’re Missing!

Chances are you’ve had, or made, a DIY cocktail at home that just didn’t taste right. It might have tasted outright foul. While it’s hard to say where the bartender went wrong, Occam’s razor says it was the lack of sweetness. Based on our observation, a good portion of the cocktail recipes we’ve seen online usually omit essential sugars; i.e. Simple Syrup.

Simple syrup is one of the most important and essential ingredients for cocktail creation out there. The vast majority of cocktails require some sweetening. You might be thinking that juice will get the job done. Sometimes it will, but more often than not it won’t.

Lack of a simple syrup is probably the second most common mistake DIY bartenders make, right after not measuring. The blunt truth is that liquor is either made to have a clear taste or a strong/bitter one. It’s made to be blended with types of taste, though a nice bourbon on the rocks is good for what ails you.

This is where sugar comes in. The sweetness takes the edge off on the liquor and makes it more enjoyable. If you just dumped a spoonful of sugar into a cocktail, it’s going to be grainy like sand. Not so pleasing to the mouth. This is why a simple syrup is optimal.

Digital kitchen scale (envato.com)

The recipe calls for one part water and one part sugar. The easy way to achieve the right amount is weigh both with a digital scale. If you use a measuring cup for the water, it won’t be accurate.

100g of sugar and 100g of water would be perfect for a dozen or so drinks.

Unfiltered tap water might impart a taste, which you don’t want. Simple syrup should be as neutral as possible. If you don’t have a filter, like Brita, just get some bottled water.

Now that you know how make Simple Syrup, why not make some COCKTAILS?
