Salad Dressing: Keeping it simple & healthy
Have you ever looked at the ingredient list on a bottle of salad dressing? It’s frightening. Unless you’re a food chemists, it is doubtful you’ll know what half the things are. Even worse, they are usually loaded with sugar. In short, dressings turning a healthy salad into a dumpster fire.
Never fear, dressings can be easy to make at home. This recipe is here to save you.
We picked up the idea for this recipe when we were in Turkey doing some hospitality exchange. Truly, this is one of the simplest dressing out there. It’s quick to throw together, doesn’t require many ingredients, it’s carb-free, it’s healthy, and most importantly it taste great. For all these reasons, this is our go to dressing. We make it almost every day, in fact.
One thing we really love about this dressing is that it’s made in the salad bowl as you’re making the salad. This means fewer dishes to clean afterwards. Who doesn’t like that?
When you get right down to it, this is basically oil and vinegar, with a few extra things.
Quality Counts
Never skimp on quality extra virgin olive oil. We can’t stress that enough. The foundation of taste will come from that. Just as important, never substitute extra virgin for a blended oil or virgin olive oil. Yes, they are cheaper, but you’ll forfeit all the health benefits that come with extra virgin. The trade off is not worth it.
In the spice department, we’ve found that freshly ground pepper gives a much sharper and perkier taste. If you don’t have a pepper mill, it’s fine to use pre-ground. However, a pepper mill is a great investment if you use a lot of pepper. Nothing really beat the taste of freshly ground pepper.
If you’re looking a durable and handy grinder, we use and recommend getting a Peugeot. Check out our review for the Peugeot Pepper Miller.
If you don’t have apple vinegar, a white will do. Apple vinegar just adds a little more roundness to the taste.
Go Krazy
If you wanna kick things up a notch, replace your salt with Jane’s Krazy Mixed Up Salt. It adds so much, and asks so little. It usually my go to spice when making dressings, so much so that I make sure I buy it in 3-packs. Best of all, there is no sugar added, so it helps keep your salad dressing carb-free.
Krazy salt seriously takes all the work out of creating a spice blend. Remember, if you cheat and win, you still win!
