Notes
Waffles vs. Pancakes
Aren’t pancakes and waffles the same? Like brothers from a different mother? In word, no. We could say they are related, but more like cousins. They are both flour-based breakfast fare that get smothered with syrup and butter. However, when you start looking under the hood you will notice some key differences.
Waffles contain more sugar and fat. Both of these help crisp out the outside, while keeping the inside moist and chewy.
Waffles are far easier to make than pancakes. The waffle iron takes care of all the work, creating a perfect form. Of course that means you have to own a waffle iron.
There is such a wealth of variety and styles in the US, which just don’t exist in Japan, unfortunately. You really have to pay through the nose in Japan, which is really a crying shame. You can, however, get one of these ‘hot sand machines.’ Tragically stupid name. To be fully clear; I don’t think they’re great, but they will get the job done. Generally speaking, they don’t get the waffles crispy enough. They are cheap, and don’t take up a lot of space. They also have the added bonus of multiple plates for create other foods, like hot sandwiches.
Honestly, the best option to just order a waffle iron from the US have it shipped over to Japan. Many can be shipped for under $20.
For the unwilling
If you’re not willing to invest in a waffle iron, than I suppose you will be stuck in pancake world. There are worse things that could happen. One major advantage to pancakes is that they can be stuffed with fruits, nuts, and/or chocolate. Waffles are a little more difficult in that regard.

Topping Waffles
Now that you have your waffles, what should you put on them? You can always go with the classic syrup and butter. Nothing wrong with that.
Ice cream works incredibly well.
If it’s the right season, you can create a tropical mix of fruit and then add some amazing coconut syrup.
Go for broke and make some whipped cream!
An Ode To These Stallions of the Breakfast Table
With all the breakfast options one has
And the seemly endless parade of cereal
Few want to put in the time and energy
For something that could be really simple,
Luscious, and fantastically decked out all at the same time.
Everybody should make time for
Something as wholesome as the humble waffle!
You can’t have waffles without the Waffle Song!
